Islampur in Old Dhaka, Bangladesh is one of the largest wholesale textile markets in the country. There is a large stock of salwar-kameez, shirt-pants-Punjabi, sari-lungi and various types of thanas and yarns. There are also clothes of different foreign brands.

 

When to start this market:

Shortly after the Mughal subedar Islam Khan came to Dhaka in 1610, the area west of Ahsan Manzil was renamed Islampur. At that time there was no big cloth market in Islampur but sewing was going on. The wholesale cloth business started here in 183 from the time of East India Company. But before there was also a business of various fruits in Islampur, for which the area was also called Ampatti.

 

The number of stores:

There are about four thousand small and big shops registered by the Textile Traders Association in Islampur. There are at least six thousand other small and medium shops. Fabrics available:

Salwar-kameez, shirt-pants-Punjabi, sari-lungi, suit, burqa and all other wearable garments. There is also a combination of all kinds of yard cloth.

 

Buying, Selling and Exporting:

In this market clothes worth crores of rupees are bought and sold every day. And at the beginning of Ramadan, it sometimes reaches hundreds of crores of rupees. The clothes here are exported not only to the country, but also abroad. Three-piece women's clothing is exported to the United States, Saudi Arabia and Canada, and boys' shirt-pants are exported to the United States, Germany, Japan and Australia.

 

Closing days and times:

This market is only closed every Friday and on special days. The market is open daily from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm.
